Medication management describes the process used to assure the safe and effective use of drugs in a conscious manner. The goal of providing medication management is to make sure that the medication is right for the patient and his or her health conditions and that the best possible outcomes from treatment are achieved.

It is estimated that at least 55% of older adults do not take medications as prescribed by their doctor. Likewise, it is estimated that 30% of all hospital admissions for people over the age of 65 are directly related to medication noncompliance.

Having multiple medications to deal with can be confusing for both patients and caretakers, and negative outcomes can result from that confusion. Multiple prescriptions alone can be confusing; for example, many medications must be taken multiple times a day while others are only once a day.

Developed by NEAT, LLC, the The ManageMed Screening is an assessment tool that can help various clinicians, such as nurses and rehabilitation specialists, to determine if a person can manage a moderately difficult medication routine (i.e. three different medications, all with different dosages and schedules).

Our Occupational therapists counts and manipulates simulated pills and verbally answers a number of questions about real-life medications.

The kit itself consists of a plastic carrying case containing simulated prescriptions, prescription information sheets, “pills” and vials. In addition the test includes a test booklet with reproducible forms, a magnifying glass, and a weekly pill organizer.

The test holds promise for use in rehabilitation by healthcare professionals who are responsible for assessing independent living skills.
